Moeder

A series of on-set photographs from a short film titled ‘Moeder’ (Mother) that was shot in Kyiv, Ukraine in October 2021 by director Salomon Ligthelm.

I followed the film crew for three days and documented these in-between-moments, trying to capture the actors fully immersed in their characters. Even though the setting was fictional, there was something magically real about these people and the environments they were in. And in the light of the recent events in Ukraine, these photographs have taken a different meaning to me. Fictional or not, I feel emotionally connected to these people. There is a level of honesty and rawness to these faces, that feels almost eerie considering the current situation that these people are experiencing now. 

This series was selected to be a part of a group exhibition curated by Annika Haas for the Tallin Museum of Photography titled “Estonian and Finnish Analogue Photography Today”.
