Timeless transit
The experience of being in mega cities is infinitely interesting to me. A massive machine that beats non-stop and the scale of everything from the amount of people to buildings to infrastructure is so big that it actually becomes quite intimate. You have no privacy, but at the same time you are completely invisible.
The day to day commute was one of the most interesting things for me to observe in Tokyo. Millions of people go through the vast metro network daily – together, this mass of people, all anonymous to each other, form a complex scene where small stories and encounters are staged every second of every day around the city.
Timeless Transit is one thin sequence of these encounters that I observed on a single metro journey from Shibuya to Shiodome. The black suits, uniforms if you will, only add to the absurd setting where it’s almost impossible to say if these photographs are from the 70’s or yesterday. Only if you look closely you can find people on their smartphones and one person listening to music with the distinctive Apple ear buds. These small aesthetic details combined with the ever changing play of anonymity and emotion really struck me and has made me come back to these memories and photographs time and time again.
